OUMAYAB- The Ohio University Spanish Abroad Program

One major stereotype I have heard about Mexicans is that they are very, very poor. They cannot afford many of the things the middle and upper classes are used to in the United States and because of this, crime is more prevalent in Mexico. I’ve also heard that the illegal drug trade is very strong there.

While in Mexico, I intend to deepen my understanding of the Mexican culture, especially the Mayan roots in the Yucatan Peninsula. I also wish to greatly improve my fluency in Spanish, and my ability to communicate in general. I intend to make lasting friendships and to give those I'm staying with the chance to learn about the culture of the United States in 2008.
