Dear Blog
Expectations:
I cannot wait for Mexico! I hope this experience will put me well on my way to achieving one of my life goals of attaining fluency in a second language. This is my second study abroad trip, so I am interested to see how the two experiences compare. I expect that I will have my ups and downs in Merida, but it's important to remember that's how life goes, regardless of where you are in the world!
Stereotypes:
Holding stereotypes of other cultures is something that I do not do. I consider myself very well traveled and over the years I have decided that stereotypes are a waste of time for me. I am very excited to meet the people of Merida, and I hope to learn more about the culture! I hope with this experience, I can gain knowledge that will help me to break down the many negative Mexican stereotypes that are held in the States.
Love,
Murph
This has been an amazing experiencia,
and as I am writing this, No puedo creer that it is just a few days away from being
over. During this time, I have made
great friends and even a second family! Although, I have made some great bonds that
will last a lifetime, I know that my Spanish could and should be better. Part of this is my fault, I admit. More effort could have been made on my part to branch outside the
“gringo comfort zone”. Sin embargo, as
the OU Programa Mayab took place in a small language center,
dominated by 50 estudiantes estadounidenses, it became very difícil to meet yucatecos outside of
the bar and disco scene. We did have one
excursion, in which we had the oportunidad to meet and
make friends with Mexican university students at the Universidad Tecnológica Metropoliltana. In the future, I hope participants continue
to take advantage of this opportunity provided by OU. I also hope that OU makes a better effort to
fix this problem.
Although I did not possess any
prejudgments pertaining to the people of Mérida and the people of the Yucatán, I also did
not possess much knowledge about the rich culture that thrives here. After spending time here, I have fallen in
love with the friendly gente yucateca, the AMAZING comida, and the música
expresiva. I cannot wait to return to
Mérida in the future.
