Stereotypes and Expectations of Mexico

When I think of Mexico, the first thing that comes to mind is their rich cultural heritage.  From what I have learned about Mexico, I have primarily noticed tight-knit, hard working families with a strong religious faith, most notably Catholic.  There also seems to be a fun, festive side to the Mexican culture, but when it's time to get serious, work must be done.  I  hope to experience the  diverse environment   and rich Native history, while initiating bonds that will always be cherished.  I am sure that studying abroad will open my mind to new experiences, ideas, and beliefs!

Before arriving in Mexico, I was unsure of what to expect, but my experience here went above and beyond any expectations here.  I knew that there was a strong culture here, but after spending some time learning, I have come to realize that Yucatan is unique in own way, and different from the rest of Mexico.  I enjoyed our excursions because we had the opportunity to learn a lot of things about the  very important  Mayan culture that was in touch with the earth in a way that nobody else is today.   The culture here is like no other I have ever seen; it seems that there is constantly an activity going on in el Centro, and is usually free.  My family here has opened up their home to me, helping me feel welcome and comfortable here. Some of the stereotypes of the Mexican culture are ridiculous, and I don’t know where they came from.  The people here are willing to help me at any moment, which is something we don't see back in the states.  It seems that the people here are more connected with their families, friends, history, and culture than we are in Ohio.  We really could learn a thing or two from the Mexican people.  A few of the things we could find beneficial in the states include; the public transit- cheap, dependable, easy.  Hammocks- need I say more?  Some more of my favorites are siestas,  panuchos, laundry service, marquesitas, Carnival,  the list goes on and on.  Studying abroad in Mexico has been one of the best life changing decisions I have ever made, and hope to return here soon.  I would recommend this program to anyone!

Uxmal
