Stereotypes
Stereotypes that I have heard about Mexicans are they are lazy and take a lot of naps. They eat a lot and are fat. They also supposedly drink huge amounts of beer and tequila. Mexicans are very loud and enjoy gossiping. They dance a lot and have a lot of parties. People also assume all Mexicans wear sombreros regularly.
Expectations
My first expectation, an obvious, but extremely important one, for my time in Mérida is to become fluent in Spanish and progress my language skills. I also expect to become good friends with everyone else going to Mexico with me. I hope to learn more about the people of Mexico and their culture, while also growing up and learning about myself.

- I have improved my Spanish an enormous amount in reading, writing, and of course speaking.
- I am not fluent, but I have made huge progress and hope to continue this progress when I return home.
- I have made so many great friends on this trip and have had amazing experiences with them.
- I’m grateful for the opportunity to meet everyone.
- I have learned so much about Mexicans and their culture. There is so much to learn and take in.
- I think I have matured even more and grown, however I think I will really realizes the changes within myself when I return to the States.
- I’ve learned that many Mexicans work here, however there are also muchachas that do much of the housework and cooking.
- People have a bigger lunch, but often don’t eat much else the rest of the day.
- The food is very different than “Mexican” food in the States.
- Just like the United States, some people drink a lot of alcohol and others do not.
- Mexicans are very emotional and excited when they speak, much more so than Americans.
