I try to live my life without preconceived notions of people, but stereotypes are a part of reality and human nature. The stereotypes I think of when I think of Mexico are men that are macho and flirtatious and women who are hardworking and independent. I don’t know if that is even close to accurate though. I also picture big families that get together often and are loud and opinionated and like to drink. I think of multigenerational homes and laundry hanging on the line and telenovelas. I’m excited to live in Mexico and learn who Mexicans really are.

In Mérida, I hope to significantly improve my Spanish speaking skills and to increase my vocabulary. I expect to have difficulty at first, but I hope by immersing myself in the language with mi familia and my classmates, I will grow each day. I expect to try one new thing each day, whether it is a phrase, food, or activity. I expect my classes to be very challenging, but rewarding. Other expectations include making lasting friendships, gaining a new insight to a new culture, traveling and having fun. I expect to love Mérida so much that I will want to visit again and again!
