Stereotypes:
Some of the stereotypes I have about Mexico simply come from what I have heard from other people and have no factual basis behind them. When I think of Mexico, I think of beautiful terrain. I believe that the vast majority of people live in low to middle class homes and in somewhat unfavorable conditions. But I also believe that the people very happy and have a positive outlook on life. I think that most Mexicans take extreme pride in their culture, traditions, and faith. I also believe that the Mexican government is somewhat corrupt and that most local people can get away with criminal acts by paying off the police or government. I hope that by experiencing first hand Mexico and having conversations with locals that the negative stereotypes I have dissipate.
Expectations:
My biggest expectation in my travels abroad in Merida is expanding my cultural horizon. I am a Political Science major and plan on specializing in International Relations and Foreign Policy. It is only to my benefit to put myself into another country and first handedly experience the similarities and differences between those of my own. I expect to make friends. I also expect to enhance my communicating skills. I expect, toward the end of my travels, to be close to fluent in another language. I am extremely excited.
In Merida:
Chichén Itzá
En el fin de semana pasado, yo fui a una de las siete maravillas del mundo, Chichén Itzá. Este lugar es muy famoso alrededor del mundo. Muchas personas viajan aquí para ver el espectáculo arquitectura de los mayas. Yo vi el más grande campo de juego de pelota Americana. Hay mucho misterio alrededor de las ruinas y los mayas porque un hombre quemó todos los libros de sus historias. Los animales como águilas, serpientes, y jaguares representan los dioses. Los corazones de las personas eran ofrecidos como sacrificios. Una cosa que no me gustó, fue que los vendedores quieren que compre los recuerditos. Pero me encantaba todo lo demás. Las ruinas fueron magnificas, fantásticas, impresionantes, e increíbles.
el Mercado
Cocimos al dueño de una tienda en el Mercado. Se llama Chafí Dajdaj Alam. El ha trabajado en su tienda por 40 años! Es un negocio familiar que fue empezado por su papa. Tiene una empleada que es su ayudante. Tiene un hermano que trabaja con él también, pero está enfermo.
El vende huipiles, fustanes, y mucha ropa típica de Yucatán. Sus materials son de los pueblos. La gente del pueblo hace la ropa a mano y también a máquina. Hay mucha competencia con otras tiendas: con diez tiendas, más o menos.
El es un hombre bueno y agradable. El nos ofreció un buen precio por todas las cosas, especialmente a Molly y a Tomás. La cosa favorite de é les el huipil. No tiene otras tiendas. El nos dijo que vende más los sábados y menos los miércoles. Lo pasamos bien y queremos regresar pronto.
