Stereotypes:

Some of the stereotypes I have for my trip to Mexico are as followed. One of the stereotypes I have is that Mexican men are very attracted to American women, and they will do anything to sleep with them. Another stereotype I have is that everyone lives in pueblos, the small mud-made houses. Also, I think that it will
be unbearably hot, and everyone will be very sweaty all the time.

Expectations:

My expectations for my time spent in Mérida are numerous. First off, I want to gain a deeper understanding of a culture other than my own. I hope to delve deeper into the different customs and traditions of the Mexican people. I also hope to develop a lasting relationship with my host family, as well as the many friends I hope to make while on the trip. Finally, I hope that I will be able to greatly build my Spanish skills in all aspects.

In Merida:

Uxmal

El otro día los estudiantes de la programa MAYAB y yo fuimos a las ruinas de Uxmal. El viaje fue casi dos horas porque las ruinas son muy lejos de Mérida. Tuvimos un guia excelente y el nos describió muchas cosas diferentes sobre las ruinas. Por ejemplo, el civilizacion de los Mayas tuvo muchos dioses, pero el primer dio fue el dios de lluvia y muchos de los edificios en Uxmal tienen simbolos para esto dios. Despues de exploramos las ruinas, comimos en una restaurante magnifico. En el fin del viaje, fuimos a los cuelvas de Lol Tun, para explorar una ciudad subterano. Esto viaje fue muy interesante y divertido tambien.

Dondé

Hoy los estudiantes y yo fuimos a la fabrica de galetas se llama “Dondé.” Fue una experiencia muy interesante y muy agradable también. Primero, cuando llegamos a l fabrica, tuvimos que ponernos unas redecilas sobre nuestro pelo por razones sanitarios. Todos parecíamos muy comicos. Despues de que nos quitamos nuestras joyas, nosotros entramos a la fabrica. La primera cuarta que nosotros visitamos contenó muchas materias primas para hacer las galletas. Por ejemplo había tonelados de azucar y harina y sal tambien. La fabrica era muy grande y tenía mucas cuartas grandes. La proxima cuarta era la más grande y tenía gran maquinas para hacer las galletas. Aquí las maquinas mezcla las materias primas y entonces las ponen en un transportador muy largo. El transpetador las mueven las galletas rapidamente por un horno y entonces por un gran refrigerador. Despues de ellas se han cocinado, un equipo e mujers las ponen n cajas o una maquina las pone en bolsitas. Todas las galletas que hacen en un día se van a vender en una semana. La fabrica “Dondé” produce muchas tipas de galletas y otra comida tambien. En una cuarta la producen pasta tambien! En el fin del viaje nosotros recibimos bolsas grandes de muchas tipas de galletas. Fue mi primera vez en una fabrica, y yo pensaba que era muy interesante. Pero nunca yo podría trabajar en una fabrica porque el trabaja es muy monótono y los trabajadores no ganan mucho dinero tampoco. Me gusto mucho el viaje, especialmente las galletas gratis en el fin.

After Merida:

Expectations:

After spending three months here in Merida, it's obvious that my former thoughts about the city have vastly changed, as I had never been here before. Not to sound too blunt and simplistic, but the city is more Mexican than I ever thought. By this I mean the colors of buildings are bright and vivid and many people dress in the traditional Yucatecan style of the long white dresses with colorful embroidery. I thought the houses we would be living in would be similar to the American houses of suburbia with white siding and big front yards, but they too are incredibly different. They're made out of cement and instead of white picket fences they have cement walls with broken bottles on top to keep out the robbers... even though I have never heard of any break-ins. The two things that are worse than I expected are the men and the corruption of the government. I never thought I would hear of anyone getting flashed while walking to school, but that has definitely happened more than once. Also, just today I was followed by the police for three city blocks while they continued to whistle at me and blow me besos, leaving me wondering who I would go to if I had ever been harassed by someone, seeing as they aim to do the same thing.

Stereotypes:

Over all however, it has been an amazing experience, and completely surpassed all of my expectations. I never believed I would be able to see and do all of the things I have accomplished during these 10 weeks. From the beautiful Mayan ruins to seeing monkeys in the rain forest, this experience was filled to the brim with exciting adventures. If given the option, I would not hesitate to take this trip again.
