Expectations and Sterotypes of Mexico

Expectations

During my time studying abroad in Mérida, Mexico I expect to be immersed in a new and different culture through both language and experience.  I hope and expect to become conversationally competent in the Spanish language but I also expect to learn equally as much through exposure to a culture that is not my own.  I expect winter quarter to be my most rewarding quarter at Ohio University and although I have certain expectations for the trip, I also expect the reality of the experience to be completely different than whatever my preconceived notions are currently leading me to expect.

Mexican Stereotypes

Stereotypes exist for all people and all cultures.  With respect to Mexico there are several stereotypes that are both positive and negative.  Many people believe that Mexican culture is dominated by men while women are thought to be somewhat submissive.  This stereotype is also seen in the thought that Mexican men are very aggressive with women.  There is also a notion that Mexicans are somewhat violent and are more likely to commit crimes and/or be involved in gangs or cartels.  People assume that Mexicans have very large families with overbearing mothers.  The notion of an overbearing mother also plays into the stereotype that Mexican families are very hospitable and that family is a top priority.
