Many stereotypes about Mexico and Mexican people exist. I like to think that I don’t blindly believe these stereotypes, but I know that I’m sometimes guilty of doing so. One stereotype is that the entire country is a dangerous place because of the drug wars. While this unfortunately is true for some of the country, I’ve learned that it isn’t true for all of it. Many places in the United States are dangerous for the same reasons. Another stereotype is that Mexicans are more primitive than Americans regarding technology. Again, while this may be true to an extent, there are definitely metropolitan cities in Mexico that just as advanced as some in America. Also I know that many people think that Mexicans are more primitive in their lifestyles, that there are more country dwellers as opposed to suburbanites. I think one reason American people think Mexicans more primitive is because there are cultural customs in Mexico still and really aren’t many American such equivalents. Some Americans believe that most Mexicans aspire to be like Americans and want to move to the United States and stay here illegally, working under the radar and not paying taxes. This is not true!!!

I hope to learn more about the culture of the Spanish people through my everyday interaction and excursions. As I aspire to become a foreign correspondent in a Spanish speaking country, I hope to perfect my Spanish speaking skills and be able to speak with a native speaker without much hesitation. I also hope to learn more colloquial terms.
