Winter Quarter - Merida, Mexico

Stereotypes and Expectations of Mexico

There are a lot of stereotypes that i have or have heard about Mexico and the inhabitants of Mexico. Honestly most are not positive stereotypes, Mexico is known for being dirty and parts are seen as very dangerous places to be especially when you are not from the area.  The Mexican people themselves are also known for being dirty and a bit sketchy especially Mexican men. It is portrayed often in the media that they are very derogatory and that theft is not uncommon among them.  Although these are the stereotypes that i have or have heard i will keep an open mind when submerged into their culture in the winter.

My expectations for Merida are very high. I am planning on being placed out of my element and being forced to start to SPEAK the Spanish language better, rather than just reading and understanding it. I expect that the classes will be challenging being i will be in the 300's but i still plan on having a great time there in Merida.

UTM

Visiting the school was a very unique experience for me, and I’m sure for everyone else who participated in the activity.  Essentially, each OU student was paired up with two students from UTM.  I was paired with two girls who spoke very, very little English, so it was a bit difficult for us to communicate at first.  I am in the 300-level Spanish classes here in Merida, but my worst aspect of the language is speaking it, which made for a bit a a struggle.  They gave me a tour of the school and then we just sat and talked about things, such as our hobbies, what kind of music we like, etc.  As the day went on, it became easier to communicate with the two young girls and we had a good time joking around.  At the end we exchanged information and parted ways.  All in all it was a great experience to learn about college in a different country and to practice my Spanish with two native speakers.
