Winter Quarter - Merida, Mexico

Stereotypes and Expectations of Mexico

There are many stereotypes about Mexico and Mexican people that I am aware of that I do not necessarily believe. These include that Mexicans are lazy, that they are dirty, that they are hard manual workers, and that Mexico is a violent country filled with violence, drugs, and corruption. I know that these statements are not true and I am looking forward to proving them wrong.

This winter quarter study abroad experience in Merida, Mexico will be a wonderful opportunity for me to become authentically immersed in the Spanish language and Mexican culture. I expect to practice speaking Spanish as much as possible as I need to pass the Oral Proficiency Interview to graduate. Honestly, I believe that this is going to be an amazing experience people only dream about and that, as long as I follow the rules and behave responsibly; I will have a great time with my classmates, teachers, family, and future amigos!
